International audience This chapter explores how social media enable migrants from sub-Saharan Africa to maintain, and even develop, close ties with their loved ones despite the physical distance that separates them from their homeland, as well as with members of the diaspora settled in other cities, countries, or even continents. These connected migrants are “present at distance” orally and in writing to use an expression from Diminescu (2005). The case study focuses on a page called “Zarma Dooni” (Zarma Song), created in 2014 by two members of the Nigerien diaspora. As speakers of Songhay-Zarma, they have set themselves the mission of promoting this culture and encouraging the writing of this oral tradition language.
