In response to several persistent challenges within Benin’s educational system such as insufficient instructional support, the
widespread yet unregulated use of smartphones, and the scarcity of educational resources tailored to the local curriculum. This paper presents the development of an Adaptive and Autonomous Learning Support System  powered by artificial intelligence. The proposed system is specifically designed for students in the 7th grade of secondary school and seeks to transform smartphones, often perceived as sources of distraction, into intelligent educational assistants that foster meaningful, personalized, and curriculum-aligned learning experiences. The SAAA platform offers a comprehensive suite of features: concise and structured summaries of lessons, in-depth explanations of academic subjects and literary texts, interactive exercises with guided step-by-step corrections, and formative assessments that adapt to each learner’s individual pace and comprehension level. All content is developed in full alignment with Benin’s competency-based approach to education, ensuring both relevance and pedagogical consistency. A key strength of the system lies in its ability to support autonomous learning, enabling students to study effectively even in the absence of direct parental or teacher supervision—an important consideration in many households where educational guidance may be limited due to time constraints or lack of expertise. The system also has the potential to engage parents more actively in their children’s learning process by offering clearer insight into academic content and progress. This research is grounded in a detailed contextual analysis of the Beninese educational landscape and a critical review of existing digital learning technologies. It also outlines a methodical and iterative design process for the AI-powered solution, highlighting both the technical architecture and the educational design principles that inform its development. The results of a pilot implementation provide valuable insights into the system’s effectiveness, its ease of adoption, and its
impact on learners’ engagement and performance.
