Traditional Medicine in Africa: Opportunities for AdvancingResearch Innovation, Drug Discovery, and Development

The use of traditional medicine for treating health conditions in Africa has been recognized forcenturies. Many consumers of traditional medicine believe that plant products with a long historyof use are generally safe when utilized correctly. There is a growing interest in herbal remedies,driven by the need to develop new and effective drugs from medicinal plants, which has recentlycaptured the attention of both pharmaceutical and scientific communities. However, scientificevidence regarding the safety and effectiveness of most traditional medicine products is stillinsufficiently documented. This review discusses the importance of studying traditional medicineand encourages researchers to innovate technologies that improve drug discovery anddevelopment from medicinal plants traditionally used in African countries. Africa has asignificant potential to leverage expertise in natural products and traditional medicines to driveinnovation. However, the growth of drug discovery from medicinal plants faces severalchallenges, including a lack of technological advancements and low economic status. There isminimal interaction between scientific researchers and traditional healers, preventingcollaboration toward a common goal.
