Abstract

Public debates suggest that racist trolling on X is marginal noise that comes with “free speech.” For African decolonial voices, the experience is very different: ordinary posts on history, reparations or colonial violence can trigger hours of harassment that blame Africans for their own oppression. This study takes that lived reality as its starting point.

We analyze 1,847 racist interactions from 142 unique troll accounts directed over 12 months at a single decolonial African account on X (@witheld, based in witheld). The account does not buy visibility or seek conflict, which makes the density and persistence of attacks an important test of how platforms and cultures react to a modest, consistent African voice.

The study introduces the Entitlement Cascade Online Index (ECOI) to score entitlement and dehumanization in real time, and adapts Dark Tetrad traits to observable behavior on X. This field framework matters because most work on online hate still relies on self-report scales or short experimental tasks and treats harassment as isolated incidents, not as a continuous training ground.

We identify five behavioral clusters (sadistic lone wolves, Machiavellian swarmers, overt narcissistic blue-checks, covert narcissists, and psychopathic escalators) and show that each has a distinct rhythm of attack, persistence and collapse. In threads with high entitlement (ECOI ≥ 8), the “Africans did it to themselves” narrative appears in 94 percent of cases, often combined with slurs or animalization, while platform moderation fails in 71 percent of reports and bystanders trivialize harassment in 89 percent.

We conclude that racist swarms on X are not random by-products of free speech. They are structured rehearsals of entitlement and cruelty that prepare future decision-makers to dismiss African suffering. TrollLab turns these attacks into measurable evidence and offers a replicable method for platform governance, education and leadership screening.
