Tsogolo la Thanzi (TLT) is a longitudinal study in Balaka, Malwai designed to examine how young people navigate reproduction in an AIDS epidemic. Tsogolo la Thanzi means "Healthy Futures" in Chichewa, which is Malawi's most widely spoken language. The 2019 Household Listing Data are the result of a new census of the original catchment area, 10 years after the initial study began. These data are supplemental to the main TLT series, providing insights into how the Balaka area developed over the past 10 years. It includes data from all persons living within 7 kilometers of the TLT research center. To conduct a new census of the original Tsogolo la Thanzi (TLT) 2009 catchment area in order to create a new sampling frame. A secondary purpose was to allow investigators the chance to see how the study site of Balaka had changed between 2009 and 2019 (population, density, and household characteristics). The data file contains 18,672 households (cases) and 192 variables. There are up to 16 mentions listing household members. The primary variables asking about each household member consists of the following details. Relationship to respondent Gender Birth year Parents living or deceased How long lived in Balaka Marital status Illness status Phone ownership Remaining questions at the end of the data file include details about: the housing unit (does it have a toilet, electricity), how much land owned, types and amounts of animals owned (goats, pigs, and chickens), whether household received financial assistance in the past 12 months, and the type of roof the house has. Response Rates: Of the 18,739 households in the catchment area, 18,672 responded to the survey, a response rate of 99.6 percent. The study team completed a complete household census of all households in census enumeration areas (EAs) where at least half of the EA was within seven kilometers of the center of Balaka, Malawi to generate the sample for this dataset. This is the same study area as the original 2009 Household Listing (ICPSR 39243).
