TWb040612-01 Elicitation !Xoon lexicon (Animals: birds, reptiles, invertebrates)

Participants translate stimuli (animal names, in given context utterances) from Afrikaans into !Xoon. In order to elicitate the !Xoon names, we looked first through a fieldguide (The Wildlife of Southern Africa, A Field Guide - Vincent Carruthers.). The names of all known animals were produced (sometimes probably confusing between animals because not all figured animals exist in Eastern Namibia!). The collector noted the forms in context. Then we recorded the noted utterances (the collector gave the Afrikaans meaning and tried to produce the !Xoon version, the participants repeating/corrifying him), occasionally showing again the pictures.
