The peel of the stems of Catophractes alexandrii is either chewed or brewed as a decoction and drunk. Both methods are applied to cure influenza. The stems are further used to make gimlets for drills used to bore holes into pieces of ostrich eggshels for jewelry production. The name in the West !Xoon variety is "sahri" (sg.) and "sahrukee" (pl.).
