Innovation Maturity in Emerging Economies: Firm-Level Survey Data (Algeria, 2024–2025)
This dataset supports the article Unlocking Innovation Capability in Emerging Economies: A Multi-Sector Assessment and Strategic Perspectives.
It contains firm-level records for 273 enterprises surveyed across five sectors in Algeria (pharmaceutical, agri-food, mechanical, electronics, services) between October 2024 and January 2025. For each firm the file reports scores on the five dimensions of the Innovation Maturity Index (IMI) — strategy, culture, process, R&D resources, performance — together with the computed IMI, its maturity level, and the firm's sector, size and ownership classification.
The workbook is organised in six sheets: survey data, sample profile, scores by sector, ownership and size analysis, an audit trail aligning each published statistic with its recomputed value, and item-level indicators. All statistics are live formulas referring to the survey data, so every figure reported in the article can be traced to its source and recomputed.
The study develops the IMI as a diagnostic instrument and uses it to test compliance-driven innovation — innovation investment triggered by regulatory obligation rather than market pressure — through formal mediation analysis. Because most questionnaire items are binary, the analytical protocol combines tetrachoric correlations, KR-20 reliability, dichotomous exploratory factor analysis, parametric and non-parametric tests, and bootstrapped mediation.
Scope and limitations. The file contains the five aggregated dimensional scores per firm, not the 41 individual item responses. Reliability and validity indicators computed from item-level data (KR-20, Cronbach's α, CR, AVE, tetrachoric correlations, factor loadings) therefore cannot be recomputed from this deposit. Firm identifiers have been replaced by codes, as respondents participated under an assurance of anonymity. The IMI is calculated as the unrounded mean of the five dimensional scores.
