Using ChatGPT for English Language Writing: Practices and Perceptions of Master EFL Learners in Algerian Universities

Abstract: This study explored the experiences and perceptions of EFL learners regarding the use of ChatGPT English language Writing. It aimed to explore the current use of this type of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tool to enhance university students writing skill. This research employs a mixed-methods research design with first, a quantitative data gathered from a number of 50 survey respondents from the department of English language at the University of Mascara then, a qualitative data is collected from 06 interviewees from teachers of the same group of respondents. This study found that ChatGPT was perceived both positively and negatively for EFL writing. Participants in the study found it a valuable tool for improving once writing. It provides the ability to generate ideas, provide examples, and improve valuable information. Even though students’ performances such as relevance, usefulness, and engagement influenced the participants’ perceptions of the tool, students regard the negative perception of ChatGPT. It showed participants dependence anxiety while it restrains their writing skill production.  Keywords: ChatGPT; Writing Skill; EFL Writing; student’s perception; anxiety.
