Video Tour : Unity Atlantic Rhythm Map

Video Tour : Software demonstration : Voiceover Script Welcome to the Unity Atlantic rhythm map, a collection of Black Atlantic rhythms that honors the music, dance and language diversity of African and Afrodescendant peoples. The unity of social dance, music and imagery in Black cultures offers a shared intangible heritage, resilient throughout the shared historic trauma of slavery and colonization. A scientific premise of the map is the transmission of rhythm codes through practice, that is through muscle memory rather than blood or DNA. The white points represent the origin place of each rhythm code and symbolise ancestral knowledge, that is always with us like the stars past present and future. Click on each star to see a rhythm code. Each rhythm code is the parent of rhythms. Rhythm is represented in text, audio, video or all three. Click on a pink arrow to open a video, for example this Ring shout is a video that I created, with my dance partner Aurélie Cappelle Sigere. For each video you need to unmute to hear sound. There are up to six videos with each data point. This videos by the original culture bearers of the Ring Shout. The text tab credits the sources of the videos along with cultural and contextual information for each rhythm, as it becomes available. If you need a text translation, try the Google translate widget in your Chrome browser. The map integrates original ethnographic video with archival video and social media video, but we cannot use video from Instagram. You can learn about the research behind the map up here in the menu.
