Viral Pathogens Associated with Non-Malarial Febrile Illness in Angola and the Democratic Republic of the Congo: A Scoping Review

Existing reviews on non-malarial febrile illness (NMFI) in Africa have largely adopted broad regional approaches and have not specifically mapped viral pathogens reported in Angola and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). In addition, locally generated evidence, including Ministry of Health reports, WHO outbreak updates, surveillance bulletins, and conference proceedings, may be underrepresented in published literature. Given the heterogeneity in study designs, diagnostic methods, case definitions, and reporting practices, a scoping review is the most appropriate methodological approach. This review will follow the framework of the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) and use the Population–Concept–Context (PCC) framework to map the available evidence on viral pathogens associated with non-malarial febrile illness in Angola and the DRC, including peer-reviewed and locally generated data. The review aims to identify key geographical, epidemiological, and diagnostic gaps, contextualise findings, and inform future research, laboratory strengthening, surveillance, and outbreak preparedness efforts.
