Shea butter is not a single commodity. Two biochemically distinct species dominate global trade: Vitellaria nilotica (Nilotica / East African shea) and Vitellaria paradoxa (West African shea). While paradoxa accounts for over 95% of world supply, nilotica is geographically restricted to the Nile Basin of Uganda and South Sudan and exhibits a superior fatty acid profile, with oleic acid content of 55-65% compared to 40-55% in paradoxa, a higher unsaponifiable fraction, and a softer melt point. This paper presents a structured side-by-side technical comparison covering fatty acid profiles, physical characteristics, application segment analysis across cosmetics, pharmaceutical, and food sectors, EUDR compliance considerations, and pricing context. Intended as a practical procurement and formulation reference for ingredient buyers and cosmetic formulators.
