Abstract

Water plays an important role in human development. In the recent past, scarcity of water became rampant in many parts of the world. In an attempt to overcome this challenge, a remote controlled and real-time monitoring approach for water distribution system is developed. The system though presented in its laboratory scale is modular and performs water measurement using a flow-meter connected to a micro-controller. Data acquired by the microcontroller is logged to a web server/database and made available on a secured web interface. From the web interface, the user is able to control water pumps remotely as well as manage water usage in an effective and efficient manner. Tests carried out reveal 98.69% accuracy of the flow meter while at a distance of 22 meters from signal source, the Wifi connectivity used in this work begins to experience attenuation. The system can be applied to various sectors of the society such as the Nigerian water board system, soft drink companies, irrigation systems, and even monetized to provide revenue to the government as the system keeps record of the water used and the user.
