What Attributes Matter During Re-integration of Islamic Militants- Experimental Evidence from Somalia

What factors help facilitate the re-integration of former Islamic militants into host communities? This paper looks at the interplay between the personal, economic and social attributes of ex-combatants to understand what facilitates successful reintegration of ex-combatants. In order to test our hypotheses we run a conjoint survey experiment with over 1500 Somali citizens from 75 communities spread over the three cities where DDR centers are currently running. Additionally we test our hypotheses with various sub-groups such as tribal elders, religious leaders, women leaders and youths allowing us to identify and compare different attributes within and across these groups in a single experiment.
