Wind Speed Distribution Analysis and Wind Power Density for Katsina, Nigeria

Wind resource plays an important role in energy transition from brown energy to green energy as enormous amount of energy could be produce without any negativity on climate change, global warming, and atmospheric circulation. The data used is the daily average wind speed data for Katsina station which was obtained from Nigerian Meteorological station. The data obtained are daily average wind speed data for the period of two year (2016-2017). Goodness-of-fits tests at a significance level of 5% was carried out using two - sensitive tests (Kolmogorov-Smirnov and Anderson-Darling tests) to test the best fit among the four 2 – parametric distribution functions (Normal, Weibull, Gamma and Rayleigh). However, normal distribution function gives the best fit for Katsina station above all the remaining distribution functions tested. By considering the forecasted wind speed variations at different heights above the ground, Wind power densities of 67.93 – 160.33 Wm-2 at the hub heights of 15 -100 m are very satisfactory in Katsina. The result shown that the available potentials for utility-scale wind power generation at a hub height of equal and above 100 m available in Katsina.
