Lanfrica is happy to support LyngualLabs in the creation of a much-needed, hands‑on workshop dedicated to improving the writing skills of (AI) researchers in the Global South.
Motivation
Research writing is the bridge for transforming our ideas into impact. In the competitive, fast-paced space of AI, many of the ideas of researchers from the Global South are under-represented, especially in top-tier conference venues [source].
Over time, many people are inspired to be AI researchers: students want to try their hands at writing a paper for their NLP experiment, and beginner researchers want to get into the game of research writing. The problem is that writing can be quite daunting, especially to beginners.
How do we write an AI paper so that it gets accepted at a publication venue? How do we share our ideas in papers? How should we explain the related works section or the methodology section? By demystifying those unwritten rules and sharing hard‑won tips from authors who have already broken through, this series closes the skills gap and empowers Global South scholars to get their work seen, cited, and truly influential.
What is the event about?
Running over four consecutive Saturdays in May 2025, “Fundamentals of AI Research Writing” takes participants from spark to submission.
- May 3 lays the groundwork—introducing AI/ML/NLP concepts, the special hurdles of low‑resource languages, and how to spot a publishable research gap.
- May 10 dives into literature reviews and research design, teaching fast yet critical reading, reference‑management workflows, and how to match methodology to your problem.
- May 17 zooms in on writing, submitting, and reviewing: structuring each section of a paper, picking the right venue, responding to reviewers, and upholding ethical standards.
- May 24 caps the series with an assessment and expert panel, giving attendees live feedback on their drafts and a bonus sneak peek at YarnGPT
This workshop is designed to turn promising ideas into polished, publication‑ready papers. Experienced mentors and guest speakers will blend short talks with live demonstrations and Q&A.
Who is the event for?
The workshop is designed for:
- First‑time authors in AI, data science, or NLP. If you have never written an AI or NLP paper, this is also for you.
- Industry professionals looking to publish technical work
- Community researchers and open‑source contributors eager to share findings
- Anyone who wants to turn strong ideas into polished manuscripts—no prior publications required.
