At Lanfrica, we believe that language is inherent for human communication and communication. While many language technology efforts are based on text, truly connecting the tapestry of African languages requires building technologies that truly support Africans, requires being able to connect them via their major medium of communication – audio. Therefore, enabling spoken language technology will particularly benefit regions like Africa, where oral communication is central to culture and commerce.
That’s why we’re excited to spread the word about TWB Voice, a project by our partner, CLEAR Global, that is using the power of voice to build more inclusive technology for African languages.
What is TWB Voice?
TWB Voice is a platform where anyone — yes, anyone — can contribute to language technology by simply recording their voice or checking (validating) recordings from others. No experience needed. No fancy equipment. Just your voice and a quiet space.
Right now, the project is focused on Hausa, Kanuri, and Shuwa Arabic — three languages spoken widely across northeastern Nigeria and beyond, but often left behind in digital spaces.
Why Does It Matter?
Many tools we use today — from voice assistants to emergency services — are built using voice data. But for too many languages, that voice data just doesn’t exist. Without it, these languages (and the people who speak them) remain excluded from the digital world.
By donating your voice, you’re helping to:
- Build voice datasets in Hausa, Kanuri, and Shuwa Arabic
- Create voice tools like speech-to-text and text-to-speech systems
- Make digital tools more accessible to communities who need them the most
How Can You Join?
It’s simple:
- Register on the TWB Platform. You can use your phone or computer.
Note that you need to verify your email address as the last step of finishing your registration. - After logging in, make sure your profile lists Hausa, Kanuri, or Shuwa Arabic as your native language.
- Look out for the TWB Voice banner at the top — click it to access the recording space.
- Start recording or validating voice clips — that’s it!
