A scoping review of gingivitis among adolescents and young adults in Sub Saharan Africa

Among vulnerable populations, pregnant adolescents and young adults represent a distinct demographic unit that requires special attention. Nearly every aspect of the woman’s life is affected by pregnancy, including oral health. This makes them susceptible to oral infection and gum diseases. These dental problems affect not only the expectant mother but also the developing baby. Gingivitis, characterized by inflammation of the gums, becomes a particularly pertinent concern in this context due to its potential impact on both maternal and fetal health. In Sub-Saharan Africa, a country marked by a youthful demographic structure, addressing the oral health needs of pregnant adolescents and young adults becomes paramount for the overall health and development of the population. This review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the current state of knowledge on gingivitis in this distinct population, highlighting the prevalence, risk factors, and potential interventions relevant to the Sub-Saharan Africa context. Gingivitis during pregnancy is an area of growing concern due to its potential association with adverse pregnancy outcomes, including preterm birth and low birth weight. Adolescents and young adults constitute a unique subset of the population, facing distinct challenges related to healthcare access, awareness, and societal perceptions. Limited existing research on gingivitis in this demographic within the Sub-Saharan Africa context underscores the need for a scoping review to map the available evidence, identify research gaps, and inform future avenues of investigation. This review seeks to consolidate existing knowledge, drawing from a variety of sources such as research articles, grey literature, and policy documents. By adopting a scoping review methodology, we aim to explore the breadth of literature, provide a comprehensive synthesis of findings, and offer insights into the state of gingivitis research among pregnant adolescents and young adults in Sub-Saharan Africa.
