The present analysis reframes the awkward phrase pathways, constraints and policy as a concrete historiographic problem in African archaeology: how field evidence becomes credible knowledge and then durable public heritage under unequal infrastructural conditions. Working as a comparative synthesis of published scholarship rather than a report of new excavation, it distinguishes three coexisting modes of knowledge production, academic-extraction, state-curatorial and community-anchored, and traces how each handles permission, curation, authorship and circulation. Comparison across the Zimbabwe culture, the Swahili coast, the Middle Niger and Atlantic West Africa, and the southern African Stone Age shows that constraint is not generic underdevelopment but specific disjunctures between where evidence is produced and where it is stored, published and interpreted.
