Abstract
The rapid integration of robotics and artificial intelligence (AI) in library functions has profoundly altered the realm of library and information services, requiring a change in the professional skills of librarians. This research explores the knowledge, readiness, and crucial skills needed by Nigerian librarians to efficiently manage AI-augmented service provision. Utilizing a descriptive survey approach, information was gathered from 150 professional librarians in academic and research libraries throughout Nigeria through a stratified random sampling method. The research showed a significant awareness of AI and robotics (mean = 3.84), but actual adoption and utilization were low (means = 2.32 and 2.29 respectively), highlighting a substantial disparity between awareness and practical use. Results indicated that although librarians show moderate skills in privacy, ethics, and cybersecurity, they fall short in technical fields like Natural Language Processing (NLP), AI-based cataloguing, and user experience design. Key challenges recognized include insufficient training opportunities, deficient institutional policies, infrastructural shortcomings, and ethical issues associated with AI utilization. The research highlights the necessity for a strategic realignment of library training and ongoing professional growth centered on AI literacy, ethical issues, and interdisciplinary teamwork. Suggested actions consist of establishing organized training initiatives, creating strong institutional structures for AI incorporation, and updating LIS curricula to include new technologies. The research finds that with suitable skills, librarians can uphold their essential function in providing inclusive, effective, and ethical information services during the age of smart technology.
