Current state of entry-level geriatric physiotherapy curriculum in Kenya

Abstract Background Kenya is experiencing a shift in the demographic profile towards a higher percentage of older adults. Physiotherapists must possess a strong knowledge base to meet the unique needs of older adults to ensure quality outcomes. The purposes of this study were to evaluate the level of preparation of Kenyan physiotherapists related to the examination and treatment of older adults and identify the format with which geriatric physiotherapy education is delivered in entry-level physiotherapy programs. Methods A survey was developed in Qualtrics™ and distributed via social media platforms 3 times over 3 weeks in 2025 to registered physiotherapists and physiotherapy students in Kenya. The survey contained items related to curricular structure for the delivery of geriatric physiotherapy content and perceptions of preparedness for the examination and treatment of older adults. Results Responses were received from 177 participants. Topics reported to be well covered in lecture and labs included stroke, osteoporosis, and fracture risk. Topics that were least reported to be included were pharmacology, nutritional status, elder abuse, and elder self-neglect. Participants who completed a dedicated course in geriatric physiotherapy were more likely to report feeling more prepared to work with older adults than those who did not. Conclusion As the Kenyan population ages, it is imperative that physiotherapists are equipped with the knowledge to best meet the unique needs of older adults. Entry-level curricular evaluation and revision may promote contemporary geriatric physiotherapy practice.
