This session in the Digital Earth Africa Webinar Series, co-organized with the GEO Knowledge Hub, focused on cross-cutting applications of Earth observation data to support multiple sectors and SDGs. Moderated by Felipe Carlos, the webinar featured Joseph Tuyishimire, who demonstrated how Digital Earth Africa notebooks and datasets can be used to address challenges across maritime, terrestrial, and environmental domains. Key Topics: Ship Detection with Radar: Using Sentinel-1 data to identify ships, monitor maritime traffic, and map shipping lanes. Landcover Classification: Mapping land use and land cover (LULC), visualizing dominant land uses, and quantifying changes to support planning and ecosystem monitoring. Surface Mining Screening: Detecting potential mining activity by combining vegetation and water change indicators, using Sentinel and Landsat data. These examples illustrated how Digital Earth Africa tools deliver integrated insights for sustainable development, environmental monitoring, and decision-making aligned with several SDGs.
