This session examines reading instruction in Ghana’s basic and secondary schools and introduces drama-based pedagogy as a culturally grounded strategy for strengthening literacy. It situates drama-based methods within established models of reading development, such as the Simple View of Reading and Scarborough’s Reading Rope, while highlighting how role-play, storytelling, and dramatization foster fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, and learner engagement. Drawing on Ghana’s Standard-Based Curriculum and international case studies, the chapter identifies systemic challenges, including limited teacher training, large class sizes, socio-economic disparities, and resource gaps that hinder effective literacy instruction. It outlines a step-by-step implementation guide and highlights the potential of drama to transform classrooms into interactive, learner-centered environments. The chapter calls for curriculum integration, teacher preparation, and community collaboration to ensure sustainable literacy gains across Ghana’s education system.
