The Niger Delta is a major source of oil wealth for Nigeria, yet the region continues to suffer from extreme poverty and environmental damage. Because there are few jobs, many local residents have turned to "Kpo-fire," which is the illegal refining of stolen crude oil using homemade equipment. This study examines how these activities are destroying the local environment by polluting the water, killing off mangrove forests, and making farmland unfit for growing crops. The process also creates a massive public health crisis, as people living near these sites breathe in toxic black soot and drink contaminated water, leading to serious heart and lung diseases and higher rates of infant death. Beyond the local damage, illegal refining is a major blow to the national economy, costing Nigeria over $41 billion in stolen oil and lost revenue between 2009 and 2018. The research finds that simply burning down these illegal sites does not work and only causes more pollution. Instead, the study suggests that the government should help local refiners become legal through small-scale "modular" refineries, use natural methods like "bioremediation" to clean the soil, and create new, safe jobs in areas like farming and green energy.
