FACTORS AFFECTING GREEN AREA PROJECT PERFORMANCE: THE CASE OF KOLFE KERANYO SUB CITY, ADDIS ABABA

This study was explored the factors affecting the performance of green area projects in Kolfe Keranyo Sub-City, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Green spaces are essential for enhancing urban environmental quality, promoting biodiversity, and supporting community well-being. However, the performance of such projects was frequently hindered by multifaceted challenges. Guided by a pragmatic research paradigm and employed a mixed-methods approach, the study investigated the influence of stakeholder engagement, human resource management, procurement conduct, and monitoring and evaluation on green area project performance. The study employed mixed method research approach and used simple random and purposive sampling techniques. Quantitative data were collected through structured surveys from 251 respondents out of 285 questionnaires were distributed, while qualitative insights were drawn from semi-structured interviews with 20 key stakeholders. Findings indicate that effective stakeholder engagement, skilled and adequately supported personnel, transparent procurement practices, and robust monitoring and evaluation mechanisms significantly contribute to improved project performance. Regression analysis confirmed positive correlations among these variables and project outcomes, underscoring their collective importance. The study concluded by recommending strategies for enhancing stakeholder collaboration, strengthening institutional human resource systems, improving procurement transparency, and reinforcing performance monitoring frameworks. These findings offer valuable insights for policymakers, urban planners, and development practitioners aiming to advance sustainable urban green space projects in Ethiopia and similar contexts.
