O. Toure — The Refusal of Compulsory Labour in Eastern Senegal.
The economie policy of French colonialist rule used constraint to mobilize the labour force of local people for its own profit. In Tanba Kunda district, as else-where, labour conscription benefited private companies which, from 1923 to 1946, were allowed the use of numerous workers without paying for the maintenance and reproduction costs of this labour force. The article analyses the many forms of resistance the local population opposed to this regime.
