ACHIEVING TEACHING AND LEARNING OF BUSINESS EDUCATION SUBJECTS THROUGH INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY IN NIGERIAN COLLEGES OF EDUCATION FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

The use of Information Communication Technologies (ICT) in schools has been one of the greatest innovations in teaching and learning, while there is widespread recognition that people need to learn how to use computers effectively in order to function in modern society, there is debate about the nature of that learning. The study set out to understand and demonstrate the role the ICT sector could play as a critical enabler in the transition and progress towards an energy–efficient, low carbon economy. The researchers discussed ICT as a concept, ICT in improving teaching and learning; roles of teachers in the use of ICT in teaching and learning; and finally factors militating against the use of ICT in teaching and learning processes. The study was guided by four research questions. The study adopted survey research design and the total population for the study was one hundred students of Business Education in Federal College of Education (Technical) Gombe. The instrument for the study was questionnaire with 29 question items using 4-points Likert rating scale. It was established that ICT has tremendous benefits to both the teachers and students in teaching and learning of business courses, and that the available gadgets are enough to teaching the subjects to a greater amount of understandings of the learners to enhance their sustainability. Based on the findings, the researchers recommended among others that: there is need for government and non-governmental organizations to organize seminars, workshops, conferences as well as in service training for teachers on methodology of teaching so as to be able to compare and contrast effects of different methods of teaching on students’ achievement; schools should be equipped with computer and internet facilities and other necessary instructional packages like slide and video presentations; and emphasis should be placed on making learning to be learner-centered affairs as well as teaching for meaningful learning.
