African Community Psychology: a mixed-methods study of African Community Psychology mechanisms and measurable outcomes across African contexts

Community psychology in Africa confronts a persistent mismatch between imported constructs and lived forms of mutual obligation, from burial societies and savings groups to faith congregations and neighbourhood health committees. Drawing on African moral philosophy, liberation psychology and ecological theory, it distinguishes three generative mechanisms — affiliative belonging, collective control over shared conditions, and critical conscientisation — and specifies outcome families that remain faithful to each mechanism. The article then outlines a sequential mixed-methods architecture proposed for future inquiry across diverse African settings, combining relational qualitative inquiry with careful cultural adaptation and invariance-aware quantitative appraisal, integrated through mechanism-anchored comparison. The contribution is a bounded, transportable logic for designing, comparing and critiquing community psychology initiatives that honours contextual specificity while permitting disciplined cross-context learning.
