Art and Design Education in<scp>B</scp>otswana: Evolution and Developmental Trends

Art has been in practiced in Botswana since time immemorial, as evidenced by the Basarwa rock paintings scattered across the country and the practice of various craft activities. The entry and enhanced position of art in the school system are recent phenomena. This includes art and design being taught under the integrative Creative and Performing Arts (CAPA) curriculum at the primary school level. While the subject has been marginalized for a long time, developments have taken place in recent years in the Botswana education system. This chapter examines developments and reforms in the subject over recent years. It includes a review of policy shifts aimed at strengthening the position of the subject at the primary, secondary, and tertiary levels. Of particular note is the inclusion of CAPA in primary schools. The chapter also interrogates challenges encountered in such curricula reformation attempts.
