Blockchain Based Traceability System for the Detection of Counterfeit Drugs in Nigeria

Counterfeit products have become a pandemic that has infested almost every business sector and economy. Nigeria’s health sector is not an exception. Counterfeit products attack brands and their authenticity, but also pose a huge health risk to its customers and consumers. Ignorance and lack of knowledge are some of the prominent reasons counterfeit products are still being largely purchased. Several legislative and technological methods have been adopted in the past however, relatively small amount of success has been recorded. This is because, blockchain technology is still in its infancy in Nigeria.In this paper, blockchain which is well known for its security, decentralization, traceability and immutability has been explored as a means to curtail the sales, distribution and circulation of fake drugs in Nigeria. Note: The system is yet to be tested in the field; it is still a theoretical concept.
