This dataset has been compiled to support the article “Pastoralism and Sustainable Development in Maghreb–Sahel Drylands: A Comparative Analysis of Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, Mauritania, and Niger”, submitted to Sustainability (MDPI).
It contains four sheets:
Sheep_Flocks: Evolution of sheep populations (2000–2022) in Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, Mauritania, and Niger (million heads, FAOSTAT).
Meat_Production: Comparative sheep/goat meat production for 2022 (kilotons).
Water_Availability: Rainfall averages (mm/year) and renewable water availability (m³/inhabitant/year, 2020–2022).
Radar_Index: Synthetic sustainability scores (0–1) across five dimensions: rangeland resources, mobility governance, market access, services & early warning, and ecological condition.
Data sources include FAOSTAT, AQUASTAT, and IPCC AR6, complemented by processed indicators created by the authors. The dataset is intended to facilitate replication of results and comparative studies on pastoralism, resilience, and sustainable development in dryland regions.
