Digitalisation and Safety Performance in Mining Companies: Evidence from Sub-Saharan Africa

This dataset accompanies the study, "Digitalisation and Sustainable Operational Performance in Mining Companies in Sub-Saharan Africa." It contains the panel dataset, variable definitions, and supporting documentation used to examine the effect of digitalisation on sustainable operational performance among mining companies operating in Sub-Saharan Africa.

The dataset comprises firm-level observations collected from publicly available annual reports, sustainability reports, integrated reports, and reputable financial databases covering the period 2013–2022. The study constructs a composite Digitalisation Index (DI) based on Industry 4.0 technologies and a multidimensional Sustainable Operational Performance Index (SOPI) comprising operational efficiency, equipment utilization and maintenance effectiveness, resource utilization and environmental sustainability, and occupational health and safety.

The empirical analysis employs advanced panel data estimation techniques, including Fixed Effects (FE) and the System Generalized Method of Moments (System GMM), to estimate the long-run relationship between digitalisation and sustainable operational performance while controlling for firm-specific characteristics and macroeconomic conditions.

This dataset is intended to promote research transparency, reproducibility, and academic collaboration. It may be used for scholarly research, teaching, methodological demonstrations, and replication studies in the fields of digital transformation, Industry 4.0, mining management, sustainability, and operational performance.
