The aim of this article is to describe some aspects of the linguistic variation in Sãotomense, a Portuguese-based Creole spoken in São Tomé, based on Ferraz (1979), Graham & Graham (2004), and Araujo (2006). Ferraz (1979) described the phonological system of Sãotomense, however his description ignore any variation at any level. In this paper, we will show evidence that variation on the syllabic level is widespread. The growing influence European Portuguese through literacy is only one of the many issues as far as variation is concerned. We will also present a discussion on the phoneme borrowing, especially at coda position.
