Kenya has a growing Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise (MSME) sector, which contributes greatly to employment but unequally to productivity. While MSMEs in Kenya have the potential of stimulating investment, promoting innovations, and providing goods and services, they are confronted with setbacks that often lead to their low endurance. Most MSMEs do not exist beyond their third year of operation, and for those that do, they may never graduate or transition to small or medium-sized enterprises. The key limitations experienced by these enterprises include limited skills, informality, low productivity, and a weak entrepreneurship culture. Fundamentally, MSMEs in Kenya promote the need for entrepreneurship. There is a need to reverse this inclination in favor of opportunity entrepreneurship, which is more impactful and transformative. The objective of the paper is to identify the drivers of opportunity entrepreneurship in Kenya.
