In/visible Subjects: Global Migration Management and the Integration of Refugee Children into Schools in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

How are children figured in and configured by global politics seeking to constrain migration while providing protection for refugees? To understand their role in global politics, we must understand how refugee children navigate the interaction between global migration management and regional politics, which affects everyday relationships between refugees and host-country nationals. Researching Eritrean and Somali elementary school students in Addis Ababa in 2015–2017, we explore strategies by which refugee children are made, and make themselves, in/visible in response to these interlocking politics. We focus first on how processes of global migration management play out in large refugee hosting states in the Global South, accounting for regional politics and the way they impact refugee–host relations; and second, the agency of refugee children and their families within the local implementation of a global strategy to mitigate northward migration to Europe – integrating refugees into schools in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
