Abstract The global adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in journalism has increasingly, offering benefits such as enhanced efficiency, accuracy, and the ability to process large volumes of data swiftly. Despite these advantages, there is a gap in research regarding how journalism students, who represent the future of the industry, perceive the integration of AI in news writing. The focus of this study is to examine the level of awareness of AI tools among journalism students, identify the benefits and the perceived challenges that could be attached to its adoption in news writing. The study adopted a survey technique and sampled 324 students of the Federal Polytechnic, Nasarawa. The findings show that Journalism students are aware of the existence of AI tools that can be adopted for news writing and the perceived benefits are more useful in writing precision and other scientific reports. The finding underscores the benefits of AI tools in the advancement of writing styles among journalism students. However, ethical concerns, high cost and restrictive accessibility to some of the tools are parts of the barriers affecting the use of the tools. It therefore suggests that, journalism institutions should incorporate ethical use and guides into their curriculum in order prepare students for the future on the use of AI tools that are directly related to journalism practices
