Linking the global socio-economic and ecological impacts of palm oil trade: a dual framework for sustainable development goals alignment

The global palm oil trade serves as a critical catalyst for macroeconomic growth and the sustenance of local livelihoods worldwide. However, its socio-economic and ecological impacts on sustainable development remain subject to complex, underexplored regional variation, especially as production rapidly expands beyond Southeast Asia into emerging frontiers in Latin America and Sub-Saharan Africa. Addressing this, we develop a novel dual-framework approach that structurally maps the foundational socio-economic and ecological impacts of palm oil trade, established in our prior research, to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). By transitioning from the identification of baseline impacts to the application of a structured SDG alignment framework, we explicitly delineate the distinct outcomes of smallholder farmers from large-scale corporate producers across these diverse geopolitical contexts. For smallholder farmers, we map variables like customary land rights, income, and the hazards of informal milling to socio-economic Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs 1, 3, 4, 8), demonstrating that while smallholder farmer expansion contributes to localized land conversion, the resulting, the resulting biophysical degradation (SDGs 13, 15) actively undermines progress by creating negative feedback loops that degrade agricultural productivity and resilience. Conversely, while large-scale producers drive macroeconomic benefits like GDP growth, these contrast with severe local externalities. These include globalized land tenure disputes, security conflicts (SDGs 11, 16), and ecological destruction that strips Indigenous and traditional communities of vital ecosystem services and compounds health crises (SDG 3). Our findings highlight a systemic structural tension where large-scale production boosts national economies but produces negative outcomes for local communities and ecosystems. To resolve these trade-offs, there is a need for targeted policy interventions such as bridging the “certification gap” for smallholders through fast-tracked statutory land titling, group certification, formalizing artisanal sectors, climate-smart agriculture training, and green micro-loans. For corporate producers, there is a need for strict supply chain traceability, the operationalization of closed-loop biocircular economy models, and equitable contract structures to ensure verifiable accountability for socio-ecological preservation. Ultimately, this research provides actionable guidance for policymakers and industry leaders to align global palm oil trade with international sustainability goals.
