This paper highlights the supportive role of organisational practices in harnessing the effort and commitment of ICT4D NGO staff. Drawing on the nonprofit and organisational literatures, we propose that supportive organisational practices in ICT4D NGOs (1) nurture mission congruence, (2) cultivate digital and non-digital capabilities, (3) offer and spotlight non-monetary rewards, and (4) provide socioemotional support for navigating work-related stressors. We explore these propositions in a field study involving 33 interviews across five NGOs in East Africa. For ICT4D and NGO managers, the paper offers suggestions on effective approaches for harnessing staff effort and commitment towards ICT4D goals. The study contributes to ICT4D research by providing a new construct – supportive organisational practices – which offers a new way of understanding how organisational contexts influence ICT4D actors.
