Mapping the Landscape of LGBTIQ+ Inclusion in Health Professions Education: A Scoping Review

Health professions education (HPE) plays a pivotal role in shaping the future healthcare workforce. In South Africa and globally, there is increasing recognition that healthcare providers must be equipped not only with clinical competence but also with the cultural humility and awareness necessary to serve diverse patient populations. The educational landscape for LGBTIQ+ students who study in the health professions education is often fraught with issues of heteronormativity, cisnormativity and racial inequalities, particularly in South Africa. The experiences of LGBTIQ+ students who are training to become health professionals at universities will be mapped through this scoping review, to identify key themes, gaps, and areas for future research.
