This dataset covers an African continental energy system model. It is made for IRENA FlexTool 3. Includes database file and report of the case study made with the dataset. The database can be run with open and free IRENA FlexTool 3 that can be downloaded from:
github.com (see instructions below).
The dataset is based on PyPSA-Earth (pypsa-meets-earth/pypsa-earth: PyPSA-Earth: A flexible Python-based open optimisation model to study energy system futures around the world.) , which creates a PyPSA model for a specific area of the earth. This model was transformed to IRENA FlexTool model using the interoperable energy system data specification INES-spec (GitHub - ines-tools/ines-spec: Interoperable energy system data specification).
The objective of this case study is to be a proof of concept on transforming energy system models between tools and to study how the continent’s energy system would look like if the increase in demand until 2030 was satisfied using only renewable investments. The dataset covers Africa aggregated at country level with existing assets in 2023. The case study is one of six case studies published in the OASES project (part of LEAP-RE).
