This dataset covers a simplified one-node model of the national electricity system of South Africa made for IRENA FlexTool 3. Includes database file, Excel documentation and report of the case study made with the dataset. The database can be run with open and free IRENA FlexTool 3 that can be downloaded from: github.com (see instructions below). The dataset is built based on the data by Ali et al. (2019), Open Infrastructure Map, and other open sources. The data is not comprehensive. The objective of the case study was to analyze the impacts of photovoltaic (PV) and wind integration to the existing 2018 power grid of Egypt towards 2023 and beyond, as well as to demonstrate the use of IRENA FlexTool 3 in multi-node grid modelling. This study modeled South Africa’s power system as whole to give insights on how to decrease the load shedding and ensure security of supply while diversifying the electricity generation mix, becoming less dependent on coal-fired power plants and adding more renewable generation. Model data is based on the 2022 and 2023 statistics from the South African government-owned national power utility, and primary power generator, Eskom and built on the 2030 projections made in the Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) 2023. In addition to the IRP’s projected generation capacity for 2030, we allow the model to optimize investments in new generation units and battery storage for the year 2030. The case study is one of six case studies published in the OASES project (part of LEAP-RE).OASES project (part of LEAP-RE) The OASES project is developing an open ecosystem for energy system modelling between the African Union (AU) and the European Union (EU). The project consists of satellite detection of renewable installations, climate-based estimation of renewable potential, and the integration of this open data into energy system modelling. The project aims to promote sustainable energy solutions and solve energy challenges in Africa by facilitating long-term exchange of expertise in energy, modelling, and data processing.
