Modeling of a rise-fall intonation pattern in the language of young Paris Speakers

Intonation seems to be one of the major cues for identifying youth language in the Paris region. As part of a large-scale corpus-based analysis, this paper attempts to model a rise-fall prosodic pattern, considered to be representative of a Paris working-class suburbs accent. Comparison with the emphatic rise-fall prosodic pattern, well-known in general French, will provide the opportunity for sociolinguistic insights. The ethnic hypothesis is dismissed in favor of a context-bound and interaction sensitive interpretation. L'intonation constitue l'un des indices majeurs pour l'identification des parlers jeunes de la région parisienne. Dans le cadre d'une étude sur corpus à grande échelle, cet article est une tentative de modélisation d'un contour intonatif montant-descendant considéré comme représentatif de l'accent de banlieue. La comparaison avec le patron mélodique montant-descendant de contours emphatiques du français standard, sera l'occasion de réfléchir aux questionnements sociolinguistiques qui s'imposent. L'hypothèse ethnique est rejetée, au profit d'une interprétation liée au contexte et à l'interactivité des locuteurs.
