Phytochemical Profile of Yellow Maca (Lepidium meyenii) Grown in Kafanchan District: Implications for Health and Nutraceutical Potential

Maca (Lepidium meyenii), a root vegetable known for its adaptogenic and medicinal properties, has gained global attention for its potential applications in human health and animal nutrition. This study investigates the phytochemical composition of maca grown in the Kafanchan district, Nigeria, focusing on bioactive compounds that may contribute to its medicinal properties. Laboratory analysis revealed alkaloids (1.24 mg/100g), tannins (2.72 mg/100g), phytates (0.09 mg/100g), oxalates (0.14 mg/100g), saponins (11.25 mg/100g), and flavonoids (67.55 mg/100g). These findings suggest that maca from this region may have diverse applications in health promotion, disease prevention, and as a potential nutraceutical.
