Nigeria possesses one of Africa's richest textile traditions, reflecting centuries of indigenous knowledge, cultural identity, artistic creativity, and economic livelihood. Traditional textile techniques such as weaving, dyeing, embroidery, appliqué, and resist-printing have played significant roles in preserving cultural values while contributing to local economies. However, globalization, industrialization, changing consumer preferences, inadequate documentation, declining apprenticeship systems, and limited government support have threatened the survival of these indigenous textile practices. This paper examines the preservation of textile techniques in Nigeria by exploring the major challenges confronting traditional textile production and identifying opportunities for sustainable development. Using a qualitative review of existing literature, the study highlights the importance of integrating indigenous textile knowledge into technical education, promoting digital documentation, encouraging youth participation, strengthening policy implementation, and expanding market opportunities through tourism and entrepreneurship. The paper concludes that preserving traditional textile techniques requires collaborative efforts involving government agencies, educational institutions, cultural organizations, private investors, and local communities. Such efforts will not only safeguard Nigeria's cultural heritage but also promote employment generation, economic diversification, and sustainable national development. The study recommends increased investment in technical education, improved funding for artisans, modernization of production facilities, and stronger intellectual property protection to ensure the survival and global competitiveness of Nigeria's indigenous textile industry.
