Calvet Louis-Jean - What sociolinguistics for Senegal ? or: vehicularity is not the only thing that counts.
African multilingualism, for the least twenty tears, has been analysed by sociolinguists as the main place for lingue franche spread. Things are in fact more complex, and more interesting, though they don't fit the existing moulds. We have tried in this paper, starting from the senegalese field, to capture the dynamism of these situations where official languages and lingue franche are in competition for legitimating and where "linguistic capital" is shared among different languages.
