Raising Awareness of Breast Ironing Practices and Prevention

Breast ironing is a harmful traditional practice carried out in some African countries, such as Cameroon. It is inflicted on young girls as puberty starts. The procedure is carried out using a heated object which is massaged into the breasts to prevent them developing. The aim of breast ironing is to prevent the child being sexually harassed and potentially being at risk of rape and pregnancy. This public health issue has physical and emotional implications. The practice has now been brought to the UK, although figures are currently unknown as to its extent. Raising awareness of breast ironing among health care professionals is essential in order to support those affected and safeguard those at risk.
