This dataset contains data for Kilifi Kenya, Burkina Faso, Uganda and The Gambia cohorts that were part of the manuscript “Malaria is a cause of iron deficiency in African children”.

The aim was to determine whether malaria causes iron deficiency using sickle cell trait as a genetic proxy for malaria exposure in Mendelian randomization analyses. The data includes sickle cell trait and outcomes of interest include iron deficiency and iron deficiency anemia. Other variables used in the analyses include age, sex, C-reactive protein, hepcidin and inflammation.

We have also included meta-analyses file meta-id.xlsx. This file contains odds ratios generated from cohort specific analyses. The STATA codes show how these summary statistics were meta-analyses. Another small dataset “hepcidin_severe_malaria.dta” contains additional data: 62 severe malaria cases and their hepcidin levels. Data file description: Variable descriptions and value labels are embedded in data files.
