This scoping review is an initiative of the Sub-Saharan University Gender-Based Violence Prevention and Research (SUBVERT). A comprehensive search of the literature was implemented by a health sciences informationist (GKR) in March 2024. The final search strategies were devised after a process of test searching. Nine scholarly databases were searched: MEDLINE (via Ovid interface), Embase (via Embase.com), Scopus, CINAHL (via EBSCOhost), PsycINFO (via EBSCOhost), Web of Science Core Collection (via Thomson Reuters), CENTRAL (Cochrane Library via Wiley platform), Global Health (via EBSCOhost), and Women's Studies International (via EBSCOhost). Keyword and controlled vocabulary search terms were broadly used to represent three search concepts: 1) university campuses or institutions of higher education or university students; 2) terms related to university policy-making, planning, organizational culture or administration; and 3) low- and middle-income settings. The low- and middle-income country search concept was represented by the search terms in the 2022 Cochrane Effective Practice and Organisation of Care (EPOC) LMIC search filter (see:
epoc.cochrane.org), accounting for variability of search syntax and field operators in databases or search platforms. No language limits were applied. An endeavor was made to remove comments, editorials or letters from the search results when possible.
