African farmers are perhaps the most vulnerable to the negative impacts of climate change. They are also the least able to adapt or tap into opportunities and leverage innovations for both mitigation and adaptation. This presentation puts the carbon crisis in the broader context of economic development and enhance GHG emissions. We look at the the UNFCCC process and the incentive around the emergence of carbon markets. We also look at land use change in African farming landscapes and assess existing land management interventions, including agroforestry and its sequestration or mitigation potential. We focus on an example of Kenyan market project and ask the question, does this stuff (carbon) make money? We conclude that the future of carbon markets is uncertain.
