South African municipal demarcation changes between 2011 and 2016

This dataset maps the old local municipality names (2011) to the new local municipality names (2016), to allow for extrapolation of 2011 data to after the demarcation changes in 2016 were enforced. Besides the mapping of municipalities from 2011 to 2016, this datasets contains municipal names used in different sources, since inconsistencies in naming conventions (such as in- or excluding “Metropolitan Municipality” from a municipality name, or in certain signs like slashes or stripes) hampers comparison/combining data across datasets. These include data downloaded from 1) the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) Knowledge Systems (which are based on the 2016 demarcations); and 2) the 2011 Census. Note that the mapping is not done based on spatial overlap, but by manually looking up the demarcation changes.This dataset was created as part of a research project on spatial inequality in Water-Energy-Food (WEF) security in South Africa, the implications on public health and the impacts of climate change.
